M5 closed after teenager and two adults killed in crash

A tragic incident on the M5 has resulted in the deaths of two adults in their 40s and a teenager. The accident occurred when a white BMW veered off the northbound carriageway of the M5, between J14 (Falfield) and Michaelwood services, around 9:00 PM BST on Friday, according to Avon and Somerset Police. Additionally, a second child involved in the single-vehicle crash has been hospitalized with serious injuries.

National Highways has stated that due to the severity of the crash and the complexity of vehicle recovery, the M5 is expected to remain closed until approximately 4:00 PM BST. Insp Mark Vicary from the roads policing unit expressed condolences, particularly to the child in the hospital and their family, who received devastating news overnight. Vicary praised the emergency services for their diligent and professional efforts in a challenging and tragic situation.

The closure of the motorway is necessary to conduct further investigation work during daylight hours, according to Vicary. Vehicle recovery operations are ongoing, and National Highways will assess the condition of the carriageway and make any essential repairs before reopening the motorway safely. Although the closure may cause disruptions and delays, especially at the end of the half-term break, Vicary hopes the public will understand the gravity of the situation and consider alternative travel arrangements.

To navigate the closures, northbound road users should follow the solid triangle diversion symbol, exit the M5 at J14, and turn left onto the B4509. Those traveling southbound should follow the solid circle diversion symbol, exit at J13 onto the A38, proceed southbound on the A38, and re-join the M5 at J14
