In an article in the Daily Mail, Badenoch accuses both leaders of wanting struggling taxpayers to foot the bill for unlimited child support for others. This criticism comes in response to indications from the Labour government that they are considering scrapping the two-child benefit cap.
Farage recently announced that Reform UK would also eliminate the two-child benefit cap and advocate for more generous tax breaks for married individuals. Badenoch argued that the country cannot afford these “fantasy economics” and that Britain deserves leaders who take economics seriously rather than treating it as a form of entertainment. She highlighted the irony of Labour and Reform racing to abolish the two-child benefit cap, a policy originally introduced by the Conservatives.
The Conservative Party, who initially implemented the two-child benefit cap, maintains that the policy should not be abolished. Reform UK, on the other hand, has vowed to eliminate the cap if they come to power without specifying how they would cover the significant costs associated with this decision. Farage justified his position by claiming that lifting the cap would alleviate the financial burden on lower-income workers. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson acknowledged that scrapping the cap would be expensive, signaling a potential shift in government policy.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner refused to confirm if the government would remove the policy during an appearance on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show. Labour backbenchers have been increasing pressure on the government to address the issue following the party’s disappointing performance in local elections.
