Ban on Single-Use Vapes from 1 June 2025

Ban on Single-Use Vapes from 1 June 2025

Effective immediately, businesses in the UK will be prohibited from selling or supplying single-use or ‘disposable’ vapes. This new law encompasses all disposable vapes, regardless of their nicotine content, and is applicable to both in-store and online sales. The focus of this ban is on non-rechargeable, non-refillable vaping products, while rechargeable and refillable devices will remain legal for sale.

The UK Government is enacting this ban to address the environmental impact caused by disposable vape waste. Approximately five million single-use vapes are discarded weekly, leading to a significant contribution to litter and landfill problems. Additionally, the legislation aims to curb the increasing popularity of vaping among young individuals. The percentage of 16 to 24-year-olds who vape has risen by almost 10% over the last two years.

In Liverpool, disposable vapes are a prevalent choice among young people, with 78% opting for non-rechargeable, non-refillable products. Health officials have expressed concerns about the influence of marketing in attracting underage users, emphasizing the use of sweet-flavored products and child-friendly packaging. Directors of Public Health across Merseyside released a joint statement in support of the ban on June 20, 2023, underscoring the importance of shielding children from aggressive marketing tactics by vape and tobacco companies.

Residents have the option to return reusable vapes to distributors for recycling. Retailers are obligated to accept ‘Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment’ (WEEE) and provide designated storage bins to ensure proper storage and recycling of old vapes. Furthermore, retailers in possession of leftover single-use vaping products post-June 1, 2025, must separate, label as unsellable, and remove them from the shopfloor or online store until collection by a registered vape recycling service.
