£1.2m secured for local roads decarbonisation plan

Liverpool City Council’s innovative roads program, ADEPT Live Labs 2: Decarbonising Local Roads in the UK, has been granted £1,198,500 in funding from the Department for Transport for its third year. This three-year, UK-wide £30 million program focuses on decarbonizing the local highway network to address emissions and resilience challenges. Recognized for its impact, the program was shortlisted in the Best Small Project category by the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation.

With successful phases in the past receiving significant funding, this new installment will empower Liverpool City Council and its partners to embark on a new phase of the project. The initiative harnesses research and innovation to transition to net-zero carbon local roads, with a focus on minimizing the carbon footprint through innovative road design, construction, and maintenance practices. The project will also explore new materials and processes to reduce environmental impact, including recycling initiatives.

In the upcoming phase, the project team will implement cutting-edge innovation projects across the city, such as trialing carbon-saving materials and alternative construction methods. Additionally, there will be a focus on refining processes to accelerate the adoption of sustainable solutions and inform long-term, low-carbon road management strategies. Building on previous successes, the program aims to introduce LED panels on zebra crossings and explore new specifications for road signage in high-risk areas.

As each project is carefully monitored and evaluated for value and alignment with the council’s sustainability targets, the program will play a significant role in contributing to Liverpool’s climate emergency response. By engaging local partners and innovators, the council aims to create a greener, more resilient city through this pioneering initiative
