A leaked inspection report has revealed an “apparent power battle” among senior doctors in the cardiac surgery unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Following long-standing concerns about the unit’s culture, an independent review was conducted last year. UTV previously reported that behavioral issues were posing a significant risk to patient safety based on the review.
The leaked report obtained by BBC News NI highlights allegations of bullying and a lack of trust among staff within the cardiac unit. Despite these claims, the Belfast Trust has defended the unit by stating that it is “clinically safe with excellent outcomes.” According to the report, approximately 70 staff members spoke anonymously, indicating “clear tensions” between different groups of staff.
Instances of throwing instruments during surgery and verbal abuse have been documented in the report, with one incident report filed in recent months due to such behavior. The report also mentions the bullying environment that nursing staff have been subjected to, particularly by some consultants. Despite the metrics showing the unit to be safe, the report concludes that cultural issues pose a significant risk to patient safety within the department.
The shocking and indefensible behaviors outlined in the report have prompted Health Minister Mike Nesbitt to call for a necessary change in behaviors within the unit. While the Belfast Trust acknowledged the technical competence of the staff, it also expressed dismay at the appalling behaviors described in the review.
