Detective Inspector Mhairi Cooper emphasized that the assault took place in broad daylight in a bustling commercial area and appealed to potential witnesses to come forward. She mentioned that CCTV footage from the New Town area was being collected and reviewed for any leads. Cooper urged individuals with private surveillance systems to review them and share any relevant information promptly. The suspect is described by the police as a white man with blonde stubble who spoke with a Scottish accent. He was dressed in a black hoodie with a zip, khaki trousers, Nike trainers, and a black balaclava. The man reportedly led the girl through various streets including South St David Street, St Andrew Square, and Queen Street before reaching York Place where the assault took place. After the incident, he departed in the direction of Dublin Street.
