Giant's Causeway visitors urged not to jam coins into rocks

In Northern Ireland, the iconic Giant’s Causeway has long been a symbol of natural beauty and wonder, drawing in hundreds of thousands of tourists and locals each year. However, this renowned landmark is now facing a new threat – coins. These small tokens of love and luck, left behind by visitors in the crevices of the basalt columns, are causing significant damage to the ancient rocks.

Similar to the padlocks left on the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris, the coins at the Giant’s Causeway are being inserted into the columns, leading to rust and discoloration of the rock. Dr. Cliff Henry of the National Trust expressed concerns over the impact of this practice, noting how the coins can cause accelerated rusting, leading to pressure on the joints and chipping of the stones themselves. The unsightly discoloration caused by the coins is visible throughout the site and is a direct result of visitors copying this damaging behavior.

To address this issue, the National Trust has enlisted the help of a specialist stonemason to remove as many coins as possible without causing further damage to the rocks. Signs are being put up to discourage visitors from inserting coins, with tour guides like Mark Adams urging people to leave a lasting memory through photos rather than physical damage. With nearly a million visits in 2019, the Giant’s Causeway is not only a natural wonder but also a vital part of Northern Ireland’s economy, underscoring the importance of preserving this geological treasure for future generations to enjoy.

The Geological Survey of Northern Ireland has advised the National Trust to remove as many coins as possible to prevent further physical and chemical damage to the site. While efforts are being made to address the issue, it is crucial for visitors to be mindful of their impact on this 60-million-year-old geological marvel. By raising awareness and promoting responsible tourism, the Giant’s Causeway can continue to captivate and inspire visitors for years to come
