Churchill photo thief sentenced to two years in Canadian jail

A man from Canada has received a sentence of almost two years in prison for the theft of a renowned photograph of Sir Winston Churchill, famously known as “The Roaring Lion.” Jeffrey Wood pleaded guilty to the theft of the original print from the Château Laurier hotel in Ottawa between the time frame of Christmas 2021 and early January 2022. Additionally, he confessed to committing forgery as part of the crime.

The photograph in question, taken by Yousuf Karsh in 1941, captures the image of Britain’s wartime prime minister and is featured on the UK £5 note. Ottawa Police reported that the stolen photo was discovered in Genoa, Italy, in the possession of a private buyer who was unaware of its stolen status. The situation regarding the missing photograph was only brought to light in August of 2022 when a staff member at the hotel realized that a fake photo had been substituted for the original.

Wood allegedly stated that he took the photo with the intention of obtaining money to help his brother, who was dealing with mental health issues. During the sentencing process, Justice Robert Wadden emphasized the significance of a portrait taken by a Canadian photographer attaining such widespread recognition. He highlighted the importance of trust within society that allows valuable items to be displayed for the enjoyment of all Canadians, emphasizing that the theft, damage, and trafficking of such items constitutes a breach of this trust.

Geneviève Dumas, the general manager of the Château Laurier hotel, expressed satisfaction that Canadian history was acknowledged in the resolution of the case. Wood received a sentence of “two years less a day,” which will see him serve his time in a provincial institution rather than a federal prison.
