Man jailed for life for murdering teenager in Edinburgh

In February of 2023, Lewis McCartney tragically lost his life in Edinburgh’s Dumbiedykes area at the hands of Bailey Dowling, who has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder. Dowling, 21 years old, received a minimum of 15 years behind bars after killing the 18-year-old McCartney. His defense of acting in self-defense after being hit with a bottle was refuted, with the court hearing that violence broke out leading to Dowling stabbing McCartney in the back.

Prior to the fatal incident, Dowling armed himself with a large kitchen knife before encountering McCartney and his friends in Dumbiedykes. Following the altercation, Dowling claimed to be disoriented and had no intention of causing harm to the victim. After committing the crime, Dowling hid the murder weapon on the grounds of Holyrood Palace, the official Scottish residence of the monarch. Subsequently, he fled to London before surrendering himself to the authorities.

During sentencing, Judge Lord Matthews emphasized the immense loss suffered by McCartney’s family and friends, highlighting that the victim had a promising future ahead. The judge admonished Dowling for bringing a knife into the streets, condemning such actions as unacceptable. Additionally, Benjamin Wilson, who assaulted Dowling during the incident, was given a two-year community payback order for his role in the violence.
