Nadine Yousif reported for BBC News from Ottawa, Canada, as King Charles III and Queen Camilla embarked on a visit to emphasize Canada’s sovereignty in the midst of strained relations with the US. The royal couple’s two-day visit kicked off with a display of grandeur that included a ceremonial welcome at the airport, a street hockey puck drop, and a symbolic tree planting. The highlight of their trip will be on Tuesday when the King will deliver the Speech from the Throne to parliament, a rare occurrence as monarchs have not delivered this speech in Canada since 1977. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed that the royal visit symbolizes the enduring connection between Canada and the Crown, steeped in shared histories and common values.

Upon their arrival in Ottawa, King Charles III and Queen Camilla were greeted by representatives from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian Armed Forces. They were welcomed on the runway by Prime Minister Carney, his wife Diana Fox Carney, Governor General Mary Simon, and other esteemed dignitaries. Indigenous leaders from various communities were also present to welcome the royal couple. Queen Camilla appeared in a light pink outfit from a British designer and wore a significant diamond maple leaf brooch that has been passed down from generation to generation within the royal family.

Carney’s invitation to the King earlier in the year paved the way for this historic visit following his party’s election victory in April. The visit is taking place amidst ongoing trade tensions with the US, where President Donald Trump has controversially suggested that Canada would fare better as a US state. The King and Queen were warmly received at the airport, greeted by school groups hailing from Ontario and Quebec. Some of the young attendees are participants in the Duke of Edinburgh programme, championed by the late Prince Phillip, the King’s father, since its inception in 1956
