Presently, an Indian IT company is conducting an internal inquiry to ascertain whether it played a role in the cyber attack on Marks & Spencer, according to BBC News. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been rendering services to M&S for more than ten years. The retailer disclosed earlier this week that the hackers causing substantial disruptions managed to infiltrate their systems through a “third party,” a company collaborating with M&S, instead of directly breaching their systems. Both M&S and TCS have opted not to provide comments on the matter.
The Financial Times, which initially broke the story, cited sources close to the investigation who mentioned that there are hopes of concluding the probe by the end of the month. The commencement date of TCS’s investigation remains undisclosed. Customers have been unable to make purchases on the M&S website since the end of April. The retailer stated earlier this week that online services are expected to gradually return to normalcy in the coming weeks, although some disruptions may persist until July. M&S anticipates that this cyber-attack will impact profits for this year by approximately £300m. Police investigations have homed in on a notorious group of English-speaking hackers known as Scattered Spider, as reported by the BBC.
It is believed that this same group was responsible for attacks on the Co-op and Harrods, but the most substantial impact was felt by M&S. TCS boasts a workforce of over 607,000 employees worldwide and serves as the primary sponsor for prestigious marathons such as those in New York, London, and Sydney. On TCS’s website, it is noted that they collaborated with M&S on Sparks, the customer reward program. In 2023, TCS and M&S clinched the Retail Partnership of the Year award at the Retail Systems Awards. TCS has a clientele comprising well-known companies including the Co-Op, as stated on its website. There is no confirmation at present if the internal investigation also includes probing the Co-Op hack. Additionally, TCS is known to serve clients such as easyjet, Nationwide, and Jaguar Land Rover.
Earlier this week, Stuart Machin, the CEO of M&S, acknowledged the challenges posed by a sophisticated and targeted cyber-attack in recent weeks that led to a temporary disruption. During a media briefing on Wednesday, he refrained from answering a question regarding whether the company paid a ransom as part of this ordeal
