Sri Lankan Authorities Arrest British Woman for Alleged Drug Offences

A British woman, Charlotte May Lee, was recently detained in Sri Lanka after authorities discovered 101lbs (46kg) of the synthetic drug Kush in her luggage. Custom officers proudly displayed the bags of drugs they believed Lee, a 21-year-old former flight attendant from south London, was trying to smuggle into the country earlier in May. Lee vehemently denies any knowledge of the drugs in her possession and claims they must have been planted in her suitcase.

Currently held in a prison located north of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Lee is in communication with her family through her lawyer, Sampath Perera. Perera revealed that his legal team is offering daily support and monitoring Lee’s well-being during her time in prison. If found guilty, Lee could potentially face up to 25 years behind bars for the alleged drug trafficking charges.

In an interview with Mail Online, Lee expressed shock at the discovery of drugs in her luggage, stating that she had no prior knowledge or expectation of their presence. Prior to her arrest on May 12, Lee had been staying in Bangkok and hastily packed her belongings before heading to Colombo. Asserting her innocence, Lee firmly believes that the drugs were planted in her luggage while she was in Thailand, as she did not inspect her bag before her trip to Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan customs officials reported a surge in drug smuggling activities originating from Bangkok, with another British woman, Bella Culley, also being arrested in connection with drug offences. Culley, an 18-year-old from Billingham, County Durham, faces similar charges and is currently under investigation while awaiting trial. The Sri Lankan authorities have vowed to crack down on the illicit drug trade and clamp down on individuals attempting to smuggle narcotics into the country
