Kneecap member to face terror charge in court next month

Sworn statements indicate that rapper Mo Chara, known by his real name Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, has been accused of a terror-related offense and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 18. The allegations stem from an incident where Chara purportedly displayed a flag in support of Hezbollah, a proscribed political party and paramilitary group in the UK, during a performance at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London, on November 21, 2024. Notably, Hezbollah advocacy is unlawful in the UK, prompting Chara, who was charged under the pseudonym Liam O’Hanna, to face legal repercussions.

The Metropolitan Police became aware of the purported transgression on April 22 of this year, coinciding with Kneecap’s headline-making performance at Coachella, where they conveyed messages condemning Israel’s actions against Palestinians. Subsequent to the controversial display, Kneecap accused Coachella of censoring a pro-Palestine message from their live performance stream, resulting in their dismissal by their US visa sponsor and cancellation of various international shows. Moreover, footage from a previous concert in 2023 surfaced, showcasing a member of the group making inflammatory remarks about Tories and urging violence against MPs, leading to their removal from several line-ups.

Despite these controversies, Kneecap vehemently denied endorsing Hezbollah or promoting violence against individuals, expressing regret to the relatives of deceased British politicians. In a show of solidarity, over 40 musicians signed an open letter in support of Kneecap, including Massive Attack, who emphasized the significance of the ongoing atrocities in Gaza over trivial disputes involving the band. They questioned the validity of outrage directed towards a punk band’s statements while disregarding a prevalent genocide, casting doubts on the appropriateness of intimidating music festivals into political censorship amidst critical global issues
