Euros: Cardiff set to host Euro 2028 opening ceremony and matches

During a Senedd meeting, it was disclosed that Cardiff is set to be the location for the opening ceremony of the 2028 European Championships for football. This news comes as Wales was already confirmed to be co-hosting the tournament alongside England, Ireland, and Scotland. Rebecca Evans, the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy, and Planning, unveiled this information, revealing that Cardiff will also host six matches of Euro 2028.

Conservative MS Samuel Kurtz expressed his excitement by stating, “Six matches of the Uefa Euro 2028, and not just six matches, but the opening ceremony as well.” The Football Association of Wales shared in this enthusiasm, stating that they are “very confident” that the opening ceremony will indeed take place in Cardiff. The proposal for five nations to host Euro 2028 was the sole bid and was officially ratified at a Uefa meeting in Nyon, Switzerland in October 2023.

The Principality Stadium in Cardiff has been earmarked as one of the venues for the tournament, with a total of 10 venues spread across nine cities and five countries being part of the bid. It is noteworthy that Cardiff’s stadium currently boasts the second-largest capacity out of all the venues involved. The aim is for Cardiff to host not only the opening game but also three group matches and a quarter-final. Ms Evans hailed the opportunity to host six matches of Euro 2028 and a stage of the Tour de France in 2027 as a significant achievement for Wales, emphasizing the potential economic benefits and vibrant atmosphere these events will bring.

Acknowledging the wider benefits of hosting such prestigious events, Mr Kurtz remarked that they present valuable prospects to enhance the economy, showcase Welsh culture, and attract global attention to the country’s landscapes, communities, and world-class venues. The anticipation for the 2028 European Championships and the Tour de France stage in Cardiff is high, with the events set to bring significant excitement and economic opportunities to Wales
