UK supermarket distributor suffers ransomware attack

A cyber attack has been reported on a key supplier to major supermarkets in the UK, causing disruption in the supply chain. Peter Green Chilled, a logistics firm that serves Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Aldi, disclosed that it is facing ransom demands from hackers. Clients of the distributor have been provided with updates and workarounds to manage deliveries amidst the attack.

Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, the founder of Black Farmer, expressed concerns about potential waste of his products as pallets holding thousands of items could be impacted by the cyber attack. The situation highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure within the food distribution network, with recent incidents at Marks & Spencer and Co-op also drawing attention to the prevalence of such attacks in the sector.

Although Peter Green Chilled confirmed that its transportation operations remain unaffected, the ransomware attack has disrupted order processing. The company emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue to prevent substantial losses for suppliers like Mr. Emmanuel-Jones, whose products are at risk of being discarded due to the halt in deliveries. The incident underscores the escalating threat posed by cyber attacks in the warehousing and distribution industries.

According to Phil Pluck, chief executive of the Cold Chain Federation, the rise in cyber attacks targeting food storage and distribution companies is a concerning trend. He noted that the critical role these sectors play in ensuring food reaches supermarket shelves makes them lucrative targets for hackers seeking ransom payments. Pluck highlighted the need for heightened cybersecurity measures to safeguard against future attacks and mitigate the impact on the supply chain’s integrity
