Eurovision 2025: Austria's JJ wins with last-minute vote, as UK comes 19th

Mark Savage, a Music Correspondent, has reported from Basel, Switzerland, where Austrian singer JJ emerged victorious in the Eurovision Song Contest following a dramatic last-minute upset that saw him dethrone Israel from the top spot. The 24-year-old Vienna State Opera counter-tenor secured the title with his song “Wasted Love,” an intense electro-ballad centered on unrequited love. Expressing gratitude for fulfilling his dreams, JJ humbly accepted the esteemed glass microphone trophy and advocated for spreading more love, declaring it as the most potent force worldwide.

With 436 points, JJ claimed the lead, with Israel securing second place with 357 points and Estonia following closely behind with 356. However, the UK’s entry titled “Remember Monday” only managed to clinch the 19th position with 88 points. Intriguingly, the UK received no votes from the public for the second consecutive year. JJ’s victory was marked by a heartwarming embrace with his younger sister, who broke through security to congratulate him. A heartening scene unfolded as JJ was joined by his entire family, including his 85-year-old grandfather and four-month-old niece, an enthusiastic supporter who watched the competition alongside JJ’s brother.

Having been inspired by past Austrian victors at Eurovision such as Udo Jürgens and Conchita Wurst, JJ revealed his enthusiasm for participating in the event. While JJ was anticipated to win, Sweden’s amusingly themed performance by KAJ humorously celebrating sauna culture took the fourth position. JJ expressed joy over the audience connecting with his emotional song, highlighting how it delved into his innermost feelings and offered insight into his vulnerable soul. He emphasized the message of boundless love found within his music, articulating that love is a paramount force on Earth. When asked about his celebratory plans, JJ humorously mentioned his overwhelming exhaustion, insisting that rest was his immediate priority.

For the second consecutive year, the involvement of Israel sparked controversy due to ongoing military actions in Gaza. Ahead of Israel’s performance, protests advocating for Israel’s removal from the event unfolded on the streets of Basel. Despite an attempted stage invasion during Israel’s act, the performance by singer Yuval Raphael remained unaffected. Raphael, who survived a Hamas attack in 2023, shared her emotional ballad “New Day Will Rise” which conveyed her personal experiences and emotional journey. The incident caused Raphael distress, leaving her shaken, as the Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR confirmed that the volatile situation prompted a crew member to be hit with paint, necessitating police intervention
