Man remanded over fires at homes and car linked to Starmer

A man from Ukraine has been detained after a court appearance regarding fires at two properties and a car associated with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Roman Lavrynovych, 21, who is believed to be a builder and roofer, faces three charges of arson with intent to endanger life in connection to incidents in north London. He refrained from entering pleas during the hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and will attend another session at the Old Bailey for plea and trial preparation on 6 June after being remanded in custody.

Prosecutor Sarah Przybylska stated that the reasons for the alleged offenses are still unknown. Lavrynovych, who denied arson during a police interview following his arrest, reportedly used an accelerant of a “slow burning nature” in at least one fire. The suspect was apprehended in Sydenham and subsequently charged under the supervision of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terror Command due to the involvement of a prominent public figure.

Emergency services reacted to a fire at Sir Keir’s former residence in Kentish Town on Monday, prompting damage to the property’s entrance. The house, currently occupied by the prime minister’s sister-in-law, was the scene of the first incident, with a vehicle that Sir Keir had previously sold setting alight on the same street. Additionally, firefighters tackled a small fire at an Islington property associated with the prime minister, evacuating an individual safely in the process
