Kerri Pegg, a former probation officer turned prison governor, was once considered a rising star in the Prison Service but is now facing a nine-year prison sentence. Pegg, who quickly climbed the ranks after joining the service in 2012, was convicted of misconduct in public office and possession of criminal property due to her involvement with drug dealer Anthony Saunderson. Despite her outward success, Pegg was struggling financially, with multiple maxed-out credit cards and nearly no savings to her name.
Before taking on the top job at HMP Kirkham, Pegg had been questioned about undeclared County Court Judgments by her previous boss. However, it was at HMP Kirkham where her true conflict of interest emerged. She spent significant time in her office with Saunderson with the door closed, leading to suspicions about their relationship. Despite claiming that their connection was based on professional interests, Pegg approved Saunderson’s early release application on invalid grounds, ultimately leading to his subsequent arrest in connection with drug activities.
Following Saunderson’s arrest, evidence revealed his involvement in criminal activities, including drug production and trafficking. Messages exchanged between Saunderson and his criminal associates expressed concerns about his relationship with Pegg outside of their professional interactions. Pegg was found to have accepted an expensive gift from Saunderson, leading to her arrest on charges of misconduct and possession of criminal property. Despite denying any improper relationship with Saunderson, Pegg was convicted and sentenced to prison due to the severity of her actions
