Celtic fans have begun to congregate in Glasgow city center for an unsanctioned “title party” following the last match of the Scottish Premiership season. After the 1-1 draw against St. Mirren at Celtic Park, thousands of supporters are anticipated to gather in the Merchant City and Trongate areas. However, prior to the gathering, several bus shelters were dismantled by authorities as a safety precaution.
Despite Celtic’s plea on Friday for fans to refrain from attending due to safety concerns and objections from local residents and city officials, the unofficial celebrations are expected to proceed. Approximately 500 police officers will be on duty to prevent any instances of anti-social behavior, damage, or disruption that have been associated with past events.
In recent years, fans have been photographed standing on bus shelters, but as of Saturday morning, numerous shelters in the area had been taken down as a safety measure. The removal of the shelters was accompanied by the removal of glass and the cordoning off of the area. While similar unsanctioned events in the past have been criticized by Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council for draining public resources and causing disruptions, fans seemed undeterred as they began gathering in Trongate during the match.
The unofficial festivities coincided with a major Orange walk in the city, which took place without incident in the morning. Last year, a similar gathering attracted an estimated 25,000 Celtic fans to the Trongate, resulting in 19 arrests, injuries to four police officers, and necessitating a significant cleanup the following day. Tricia Fort, chairwoman of Calton Community Council, described the previous gatherings as “hellish” for residents in the Trongate and Glasgow Cross areas, urging Celtic to take responsibility and organize a celebration for their fans in a more suitable location
