M1 crash: Motorway partially closed as cows rescued from overturned lorry

An overturned livestock lorry on the M1 motorway led to the rescue of cows on Friday morning. The incident involved 40 cattle, with the driver reported as safe, but some cows had to be euthanized. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, along with two animal rescue teams, responded to the scene, where efforts were made to save as many cows as possible.

David Doherty, the area commander for the NIFRS, confirmed that the situation was under control, with some sections of the motorway still closed as recovery efforts continued. Vets were present alongside the Department for Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs to ensure the well-being of the animals. Live cattle were successfully transferred to another lorry for transport from the site, with local diversions in place to manage traffic flow around the affected area.

The incident caused significant disruptions for motorists, with the motorway closed between junctions 11 and 12 in both directions. Local resident Lucas Vogan from County Armagh reported witnessing total gridlock and delays of up to two hours. The diversion route added to existing traffic congestion due to the Balmoral Show, resulting in missed appointments for some residents who were unable to navigate through the chaos. Despite partial reopenings of the motorway, authorities continued to advise caution and follow alternative routes where necessary
