Kerri Pegg: Prison governor who had relationship with inmate jailed

Sarah Spina-Matthews & Tom Mullen reported on a recent case involving former prison governor Kerri Pegg who was sentenced to nine years in prison for her involvement with drug-dealing gang boss Anthony Saunderson. Pegg, once seen as a rising star within the Prison Service, had a relationship with Saunderson, aiding him in securing day release, which ultimately led to her downfall. Judge Graham Knowles KC expressed his disappointment in Pegg, stating that she had betrayed public trust and the Prison Service by her actions.

During the trial, it was revealed that Pegg was found guilty of misconduct in public office and possession of criminal property. Evidence presented included a toothbrush with Saunderson’s DNA and a £12,000 Mercedes C-class car paid for with proceeds from drug trafficking. Detectives discovered Pegg had been living beyond her means, accumulating debt and purchasing expensive items such as designer jewelry and clothing. Her financial vulnerability left her open to corruption and blackmail.

Despite Pegg’s respectable position within the Prison Service, her actions were deemed unacceptable and shook public confidence in prison staff. Her defense argued that she was manipulated by Saunderson, a sophisticated criminal, and that she was a caring individual who trusted the wrong person. The case highlights the importance of upholding professional standards within the prison system to maintain trust and order. Additionally, it serves as a reminder that improper conduct will not be tolerated and swift action will be taken against those who fail to meet the required standards
