Spotify streams of UK artists grew by 28% internationally in 2024

Spotify recently released their annual Loud & Clear report in March, focusing on demystifying how artists earn money through streaming. The report aims to answer questions about who is making money, how much they are making, and how it has changed over time. Following this release, Spotify has shared a series of UK-specific stats and data.

One of the standout figures revealed is that streams of UK artists from listeners outside the UK saw a 28% year-on-year growth. Interestingly, more than 75% of royalties generated by UK artists came from these international audiences. Over the past decade, there has been a staggering growth of over 1000% in UK artist streams from outside the UK, with a total of 271 billion global plays of UK artists in 2024.

Not only are UK audiences embracing international sounds, but foreign language genres like reggaeton chileno, seresta, Lagu Timur, and Indonesian pop are also gaining significant listenership in the UK. Additionally, the fastest-growing genre in listenership in the UK is sexy drill, an American rap style that saw a remarkable 1460% growth in 2024.

Overall, royalties generated by UK artists from Spotify in 2024 exceeded £810 million, more than doubling the revenues from 2018. While Spotify paid out $10 billion in royalties in 2024, with over $5 billion going to independent artists and labels, the bigger picture for musicians remains concerning. Only a fraction of this $10 billion reaches the creators due to exploitative label and publishing contracts
