New Liverpool Lord Mayor to be sworn in

A ceremony will take place at the Liverpool Town Hall on Wednesday, May 14th to officially swear in the city’s new Lord Mayor. Councillor Barbara Murray, who has been a dedicated council member in Liverpool since 2007 representing the Yew Tree ward, will be assuming this prestigious role. Throughout her professional career, Cllr Murray has held various positions including roles as a civil servant at the Inland Revenue, a retail area manager, a teacher, and a community development worker for a housing provider.

Cllr Murray’s commitment to education and community development is evident through her extensive involvement as a school governor since the 1990s. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, she was awarded School Governor of the Year in 2008 by the Liverpool City Council. Furthermore, her dedication to promoting and enhancing the local community is highlighted by her work with Britain in Bloom and the Royal Horticultural Society on community projects like ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’, where she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by North West In Bloom in 2017.

Expressing her gratitude for being appointed as the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Barbara Murray emphasized her passion for education, creativity, and the importance of supporting literacy skills acquisition and lifelong learning. Her charitable efforts during her tenure will focus on fundraising to benefit the Liverpool Education Grants Charitable Trust, which provides financial assistance for extracurricular and cultural activities to students up to the age of 25. The charity will establish a specific funding stream for lifelong learning and skills development to address issues of employability and poverty in the community.

As part of her new role, Cllr Murray will be supported by her son Richard as the Lord Mayor’s consort, while her daughters Ruth and Elizabeth will share the role of Lady Mayoress. Cllr William Shortall will serve as the deputy Lord Mayor. The duties of the Lord Mayor include representing the city at civic functions, promoting Liverpool locally and internationally, supporting local charities and community groups, attending religious events, meeting delegates from twinned cities, chairing Full Council meetings, and conferring Honorary Freemen and Freedom of Associations and Institutions
