Patrick Spencer, the Central Suffolk and North Ipswich Conservative MP, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault allegedly occurring at London’s Groucho Club, according to the Metropolitan Police. The incidents are said to have taken place in August 2023, before Spencer was elected. The 37-year-old is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 16 June. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorized the charges, which relate to two alleged incidents involving two separate women at the private members’ club.
The Met Police revealed that Spencer attended a voluntary interview at a London police station on 13 March 2025, where he was subsequently charged with the two counts of sexual assault. The date for his appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court is scheduled for Monday, 16 June. Spencer, who resides in Suffolk with his family, was elected to Parliament in July 2024, post the alleged attacks at the Groucho Club in 2023. The club, located on Soho’s Dean Street, has been a popular venue for celebrities and media personalities since its establishment in 1985.
Following a review of evidence provided by the Metropolitan Police Service, the CPS has levied two counts of sexual assault against Patrick Spencer MP. The charges stem from the incidents at the Groucho Club involving two separate women in August 2023. The Conservative Party confirmed Spencer’s suspension and issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to integrity and high standards. As a result, Spencer’s party membership has been suspended with immediate effect, and the whip withdrawn. He has been advised not to attend the parliamentary estate during the ongoing investigation by the police.
In July 2024, Spencer secured his position as the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich with a majority of 4,290. Prior to entering politics, Spencer worked in finance at the private equity firm IPGL, chaired by his father, former Conservative Party treasurer Lord Michael Spencer. His career also included roles at the Centre for Social Justice think tank and as a senior adviser at the Department for Education. During his maiden speech in July, Spencer stressed the importance of restoring moral probity and public-spiritedness to the political system, aligning with the values urged by his constituents
