Edinburgh funfair closes after children injured in waltzer crash

A mishap at a fairground in Edinburgh led to the early closure of the venue after three children suffered injuries when a part of a ride malfunctioned and collided with a speaker. The incident occurred at the Galactic Carnival located at Westside Plaza in Wester Hailes, prompting the operators to shut down the attraction immediately following the accident on the waltzer ride on Saturday evening. Although the children, aged seven, 12, and 13, were hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries, they were later discharged.

Authorities, including Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), have initiated investigations into the incident. The father of the children involved in the accident recounted that the ride was operating at full speed when the carriage carrying his kids detached from the mechanism. This resulted in a collision with the next carriage before veering off the track and crashing into a sizable speaker. He expressed gratitude that the speaker halted further calamity, reflecting on the potential severity of the situation.

Galactic Carnival expressed regret to the affected family and announced the closure of the event to facilitate the investigative process. They affirmed that all rides undergo thorough safety assessments and are inspected by the Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme (ADIPS). The safety of the public at their events is regarded as their utmost priority, as they remain committed to upholding stringent safety standards. Ticket refunds for upcoming dates are in progress, as authorities continue inquiries into the incident to ascertain the root cause. Police Scotland disclosed that ongoing investigations are active, while the HSE confirmed their awareness of the situation and their involvement in the inquiries
