£10.99Authorities have been granted an extension to interrogate four Iranian individuals in connection with an alleged terrorist scheme in the UK. The suspects were apprehended on 3 May by the Metropolitan Police on suspicions of preparing a terrorist act. Under the Terrorism Act, the men can now be detained until 17 May following the issuance of warrants to prolong their confinement. However, a fifth Iranian male, who was held under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, has been released on bail under specific conditions.
The five men, consisting of two 29-year-olds, a 40-year-old, a 24-year-old, and another aged 46, were arrested on 3 May in various locations including Swindon, west London, Stockport, Rochdale, and Manchester. Authorities have disclosed that ongoing searches are being conducted at several addresses in the Greater Manchester, London, and Swindon regions. Cdr Dominic Murphy, who leads the Met’s counter-terrorism command, has classified the investigation as “significant and highly complex,” urging the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed details or speculations.
Moreover, three additional Iranian men, aged 39, 44, and 55, were also detained in London on the same day as part of a distinct counter-terrorism inquiry. Their arrests were made under section 27 of the National Security Act, which encompasses offenses considered a threat to national security. In a related development, a fourth individual, aged 31, was apprehended in north-west London last Friday in connection with the ongoing investigation. Cdr Murphy has clarified that there is currently no established link between the two separate investigations. Home Office minister Dan Jarvis highlighted the severity of the situation in the House of Commons, characterizing the two investigations as “some of the largest counter-state threats and counter-terrorism actions that we have seen in recent times.
