The Edinburgh Council has reported an attempted cyber attack on its education department. Staff noticed a suspicious meeting invitation that turned out to be a case of “spear phishing,” which impersonates a trusted source. Consequently, all passwords on the network, including those of students, had to be reset. As a result, learners preparing for exams are temporarily unable to access resources on Teams or One Note. Students have been instructed to visit their schools on Saturday morning to obtain new passwords from staff.

The council’s action aims to safeguard sensitive information and prevent unauthorized access to school networks. Parents and students are advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with the necessary security measures put in place. Despite the disruption caused by the cyber attack, efforts are being made to ensure minimal impact on students’ academic preparations. It underscores the importance of cybersecurity measures in protecting educational institutions from potential threats
