A forthcoming documentary showcasing the UK’s free party movement during the 1990s is scheduled for release at the end of May. Titled “Free Party: A Folk History,” the film delves into the untold narrative of how rave culture disrupted the status quo and ignited a global revolution. The documentary includes interviews and footage from influential figures in the scene, such as Spiral Tribe, DiY Sound System, Bedlam, Circus Warp, Colin Dale, among others.
Originally introduced through a crowdfunding campaign in 2021, the documentary, directed by Aaron Trinder, sheds light on pivotal moments like the legendary Castlemorton free party of 1992 and the passing of the Criminal Justice Act in 1994. Trinder reflects on the importance of this cultural era, stating, “This film offers a unique perspective on a significantly underrepresented period in history, especially as new laws are being passed across Europe criminalizing trespass and protest.”
“Free Party: A Folk History” also revisits the government’s crackdown on unauthorized events following the Second Summer of Love, providing firsthand testimonies from those impacted. Spiral Tribe co-founder Mark Angelo Harrison expresses the documentary’s role in uncovering the obscured narrative of a marginalized cultural movement.
