£36.95A barrister has alleged in the High Court in Dublin that Gerry Adams never sued the media over claims of being in the IRA because he was part of its army council until 2005. The statement was made as the BBC defends itself in a defamation case brought by Mr. Adams. Despite repeated questions about his reputation, the former Sinn Féin leader has consistently denied ever being involved with the IRA.
The BBC claimed in 2016 that Mr. Adams sanctioned the murder of Denis Donaldson, an informer, an accusation he denies and is currently suing over. During the court proceedings, Paul Gallagher SC, representing the BBC, questioned Mr. Adams about his decision not to take legal action against the media regarding IRA affiliation claims. Mr. Adams cited his legal advice suggesting he would not receive a fair trial as the reason.
In response, Mr. Adams acknowledged that this trial is different in the sense that it is being conducted by a jury of his peers. He mentioned taking legal action against the Sunday World in relation to the murder of Kevin McGuigan, which resulted in a settlement. Mr. Adams emphasized that while there have been allegations circulating, it does not equate to having a negative reputation.
Denis Donaldson, a notable figure in Sinn Féin’s political journey in Northern Ireland, was found murdered in 2006 after being revealed as a spy. He played a pivotal role in Sinn Féin post-Good Friday Agreement and eventually confessed to spying for British intelligence before his untimely death.
