Restaurant owner Gurvinder Singh Johal, a father-of-three, was tragically killed inside a city centre bank in Derby. Known as Danny to his friends, Mr. Johal was at Lloyds bank in St Peter’s Street with the bank holiday earnings from his Hen and Chickens Bar and Grill in Shelton Lock at the time of the incident. He was fatally stabbed shortly before 14.30 BST on Tuesday, according to Derbyshire Police.

Following the stabbing, a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of murder, while another man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both individuals remain in custody, as investigations into the incident continue. The bank where the attack took place is currently cordoned off, although St Peter’s Street has since been reopened to the public.

Described as a “smiler” and “a good friend” by a family acquaintance, Mr. Johal had recently returned from a family trip to India with his wife, children, and extended family. The victim’s family has been notified of his tragic passing, with Superintendent Rebecca Webster acknowledging that life will never be the same for them. The wider community has also been impacted by this shocking event, as witnesses and those who tried to offer assistance at the scene must come to terms with what they experienced.

In response to the incident, Lloyds expressed deep sadness, while local Labour MPs Catherine Atkinson and Baggy Shanker condemned the violence, stating that it has no place in their community. St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District manager Brad Worley assured that rangers would continue to provide support and assistance in the area following this tragedy
