Call the Midwife film and prequel series announced

The BBC has unveiled its latest plans to expand the world of Call the Midwife with a new film and prequel TV series set against the backdrop of the Second World War. This announcement comes as filming commences for the 15th series of the popular BBC One drama, chronicling the lives of nurse midwives in London’s East End from the late 1950s through the early 1970s.

Set in 1972 at an undisclosed overseas location, the upcoming film will feature familiar characters from the existing TV show. Meanwhile, the prequel series will offer viewers a glimpse into the past, specifically life in Poplar during the Blitz, as showrunner Heidi Thomas revealed.

Both the film and prequel projects will be spearheaded by Thomas and executive producers Dame Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank, who will also oversee the production of series 16. The prequel series promises to introduce “some familiar (if much younger) faces,” according to Thomas, as the storytelling delves deeper into historical events preceding the show’s established timeline.

Reflecting on the decision to explore earlier periods, Thomas expressed a desire to tap into the extraordinary experiences of the Blitz years in the East End. The film, shrouded in secrecy regarding its location, will see beloved characters embarking on new adventures in an unfamiliar setting, promising a visually stunning cinematic journey.

Inspired by Jennifer Worth’s memoirs documenting her time as a midwife and nurse in Poplar, the initial series of Call the Midwife premiered to critical acclaim. Dame Pippa Harris emphasized the importance of attracting a new, younger audience with the prequel series and film. The upcoming 15th series will kick off with a special Christmas episode featuring a mercy mission to Hong Kong, setting the stage for the new chapters that lie ahead
