Brazilian funk added as new genre category on Beatport

Beatport has introduced a dedicated genre category for Brazilian funk. The music platform unveiled the new category on Wednesday (April 30), as part of its efforts to highlight one of Brazil’s most vibrant and culturally significant musical exports. Brazilian funk, also known as baile funk and funk carioca, has its roots in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. While it has been a prominent sound in Brazilian electronic music since the ’70s, it has gained massive popularity across Latin America, the US, Europe, and beyond.

In addition to adding Brazilian funk as a genre category, Beatport has made several changes to enhance accessibility for Brazilian users. Subscriptions for Beatport and Beatsource are now available in Brazilian Real at a 60% discount, and the site automatically appears in Portuguese for users in Brazil. Furthermore, Beatport has introduced a new spotlight page titled “Discover Brazil” to showcase the emerging artists and sounds from the country.

Raphael Pujol, Beatport’s VP of Global Curation, expressed, “Brazilian funk is more than a genre – it’s a cultural force with deep electronic roots. After experiencing its electrifying impact firsthand, we felt it was time to bring it to Beatport. As Funk’s influence continues to spread globally, we are thrilled to offer a dedicated platform for the DJs, artists, and labels shaping its future. Through the launch of Funk on Beatport, we aim to elevate the sound, amplify its creators, and connect the global dance community with this dynamic movement.”
