Tragedy struck at Oulton Park during the British Supersport Championship race as two riders lost their lives in a devastating 11-bike crash. The fatal incident occurred on the first lap of the race, resulting in the deaths of 21-year-old Owen Jenner from England and 29-year-old Shane Richardson from New Zealand. The series director, Stuart Higgs, described the crash as a “major chain reaction” and made the difficult decision to cancel the event due to its severity.
Following the crash, Motorsport Vision Racing (MSVR) released a statement confirming that another rider, Tom Tunstall, had suffered significant injuries during the race. Jenner succumbed to a catastrophic head injury despite receiving immediate treatment at the circuit medical center, while Richardson passed away from severe chest injuries after being transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital. Tunstall, 47, was also hospitalized with serious back and abdominal injuries.
Several other riders involved in the crash, including Carl Harris, Max Morgan, Cameron Hall, Freddie Barnes, and Morgan McLaren-Wood, were treated for minor injuries at the circuit medical center. Meanwhile, Lewis Jones, Corey Tinker, and George Edwards managed to escape the incident without sustaining any injuries. MSVR and the Motorcycle Racing Control Board have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the crash alongside the Coroner and Cheshire Constabulary.
The weekend had seen intense racing action at Oulton Park, with Bradley Ray emerging victorious in the first race and Leon Haslam securing his first win since 2018 in the sprint on Monday.
