Following the destructive trail left by Storm Éowyn across Northern Ireland, NI Water has determined that the repair costs for the damage caused to the Mourne Wall will amount to approximately £650,000. A survey conducted to assess the destruction revealed a total of 63 individual collapses along the wall in six different mountains in the Mourne region. The storm, characterized by winds exceeding 90mph, hit on 24 January, leading to widespread power outages and disruptions.
In addition to the collapses along the Mourne Wall, Storm Éowyn also resulted in a nine-week closure of the Silent Valley Reservoir in the Mournes due to the damage incurred. Despite the completion of a survey footed on 24 February to ascertain the full extent of the damage caused to the 22-mile wall, a painstaking evaluation concluded that 700 meters of the structure had been affected by the storm, with 63 collapses recorded across six mountains, including the highest peak – Slieve Donard.
Despite the completion of phase one of the Mourne Wall Restoration Project in 2018, which saw over 600 repairs carried out, significant damage was inflicted by Storm Éowyn on areas that had not undergone restoration. This resulted in an estimated cost of approximately £650,000 for the necessary repairs. Only one section of the previously restored wall suffered a collapse due to the storm, prompting NI Water to prepare a business case for approval in the 2025/2026 Capital Delivery Programme.

Despite facing challenges such as the recent storm damage, ongoing restoration work aims to ensure the preservation of this historic structure for future generations to enjoy
