Jacqueline Howard reports for BBC News that a total of five men have been apprehended on suspicion of terrorism activities in connection with a suspected plot to target a specific location. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that four of the individuals involved are Iranian nationals, with two aged 29, one aged 40, and one aged 46, who were all taken into custody at various spots around England in a pre-planned counter-terror initiative.
The authorities are still in the process of determining the identity and age of the fifth individual apprehended. According to the police, efforts are ongoing to ascertain any potential motives behind the plot and to gauge whether there are any additional threats to public safety. The specific premises at risk have been informed about the situation and are receiving support from law enforcement, although further specifics cannot be disclosed due to operational reasons.
The suspects, including a 29-year-old from Swindon, another 29-year-old from Stockport, a 46-year-old from west London, a 40-year-old from Rochdale, and a fifth man from Manchester, were all taken into custody under the Terrorism Act or the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (Pace). They are currently being held by the police as investigations progress at various addresses in the Greater Manchester, London, and Swindon regions. The Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism command, with assistance from Greater Manchester Police and Wiltshire Police, as well as counter-terrorism units nationwide, is actively overseeing the probe.
Cdr Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s counter-terrorism command, emphasized that the inquiry is still in its nascent stages and that multiple avenues are being explored to ascertain motives and potential risks.
