Authorities have cautioned against attempting to help porbeagle sharks to prevent potential bites or injuries.
This warning comes following an incident where a 1.5m (5ft) shark, believed to be a porbeagle, was spotted in distress along the shoreline near Aberystwyth Pier. Concerned onlookers attempted to intervene and provide assistance.
Responding to the situation, a team from HM Coastguard and members of British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) arrived at the scene on Friday afternoon. Their primary task was to offer guidance and support to the public present.
Porbeagle sharks, known to reach lengths of up to 11ft (3.5m), are frequent visitors to the UK coastline, although they typically inhabit deeper waters. BDMLR emphasized, “Porbeagles are not naturally aggressive towards humans, but reports exist of individuals sustaining bites while trying to return them to the sea.
