Surrey woman, 115, becomes world’s oldest person

Ethel Caterham of Surrey has recently become the oldest person in the world, reaching the remarkable age of 115 and 253 days. The title was passed to Ethel following the passing of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was 116 years old. Ethel, who resides in a care home in Lightwater, was born on August 21, 1909, making her the last living subject of Edward VII.

Ethel celebrated her 115th birthday in August 2024, stating that she was unsure why there was so much fuss about her age. When asked about the secret to her long life, Ethel shared that she believes in never arguing with anyone, preferring to listen and do as she pleases. Both Guinness World Records and LongeviQuest, a database of the world’s oldest individuals, have verified Ethel’s new record.

As Ethel hit this impressive milestone, she received a heartfelt letter from the King, congratulating her on reaching such a significant age. The King expressed his warmest wishes and hoped that Ethel would have a wonderful day. He also mentioned his delight at learning more about Ethel’s fascinating personal history, detailing her origins in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, and upbringing in Tidworth, Wiltshire as the second youngest of eight siblings.

Ethel’s life story reveals a remarkable journey that includes working as an au pair in India at the age of 18, meeting her future husband Norman Caterham in the UK, and living in various places such as Hong Kong and Gibraltar. She experienced historical events like the sinking of the Titanic, World War One, the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression, and World War Two. Ethel has resided in Surrey for the past 50 years and remained an active driver until the age of 97. Additionally, she has a sister, Gladys, who lived to be 104, three granddaughters, and five great-grandchildren
