Liverpool City Council is set to crack down on dangerous and anti-social car parking in the city center with the introduction of a new parking regime. The focus of this initiative is to address the increasing parking demands, enhance road safety, and improve air quality. The changes to the City Centre Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) have been approved by the Highways and Spaces Representation Committee of Liverpool City Council.
Residents have expressed growing concerns about reckless and inconsiderate parking, with particular attention drawn to the issues on Victoria Street. The adjustments to the CPZ operational hours, extending them from 7am–11pm, Monday to Sunday, will enable more effective enforcement on single yellow lines, parking bays, pay-and-display, and resident bays. These changes are set to take effect in early June.
The modifications also include increasing the maximum stay in the Hope Street area from 2 hours to 4 hours, with no return within 1 hour, to support the thriving night-time economy and hospitality sector. Additionally, certain loading and limited waiting bays will be converted to pay-and-display, resident, or disabled bays during evening hours. Moreover, parking charges will be revised to align with other major UK cities, aiming to encourage sustainable travel and reduce congestion.
Extensive public consultations were conducted to gather feedback and address concerns, particularly from local businesses. It is essential to adapt to Liverpool’s substantial growth in recent years, which has led to increased pressure on parking availability due to the rise of the night-time economy. These changes are crucial to reducing congestion, improving road safety, enhancing air quality, and promoting sustainable travel for residents, businesses, and visitors alike
