Kneecap apologise to families of Sir David Amess and Jo Cox

Belfast’s Rap group Kneecap has issued an apology to the families of murdered MPs Sir David Amess and Jo Cox. The apology from Kneecap comes after footage surfaced of the group at a concert in November 2023, where one member of the band appeared to make controversial remarks. The statement posted by Kneecap on X is now under investigation by counter-terrorism police, and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has called for legal action to be taken.

In response to the situation, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated that individuals expressing such views should not be receiving government funding. The trio from Kneecap has denied any intention to incite violence against MPs or individuals and claimed that the footage circulating was taken out of context. They emphasized that their words are being manipulated as if they were a call to action and expressed sincere apologies to the families of Amess and Cox for any distress caused.

Labour MP Jo Cox was tragically killed in June 2016, while the daughter of the late Sir David Amess, who was fatally stabbed at a constituency surgery in 2021, called for an apology from the rap group. Katie Amess expressed shock at the dangerous and violent rhetoric publicly stated by individuals or groups. The Metropolitan Police are also investigating another video featuring Kneecap, where a member is heard shouting support for Hamas and Hezbollah during a performance in London.
