The incident took place on Otley Road in Headingley, Leeds, prompting police to respond to reports of a man carrying weapons. The victims, aged 19 and 31, were taken to the hospital for treatment, with one later discharged, while a 38-year-old man was arrested after sustaining a self-inflicted injury.

Jonathan Pryor, a Labour councillor and Leeds City Council’s deputy leader, expressed shock and concern over the events that unfolded in Headingley. The Otley Run, a well-known 19-stop drinking route that spans three miles along Otley Road, is a popular attraction among the city’s university students. Pryor emphasized the urgency to enhance safety measures in the area, particularly along the Otley Run path.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that one of the injured women has been discharged, while the other underwent life-saving surgery and remains in a stable condition. Counter Terrorism Policing North East deemed the attack an “isolated incident” and identified the arrested man as the primary suspect. Efforts are underway to ascertain the full circumstances of the incident, with Det Ch Supt James Dunkerley leading the investigation.

In Parliament, Alex Sobel, Labour MP for Leeds Central and Headingley, lauded the heroic individuals who intervened to assist the victims during the attack.
