UK weather forecast: Mini heatwave as April to be warmest in years

In the upcoming days, southern England is expecting to reach a high temperature of 27C (81F), which could potentially be the highest temperature seen in April since 2018. This surge in warmth and sunshine is attributed to the gradual buildup of high pressure across most areas of the UK. However, the lack of rainfall raises concerns about possible wildfires, especially with sea temperatures still relatively low along the coast.

As the week progresses, temperatures across England and Wales are already hitting 19-24C, while Scotland and Northern Ireland are experiencing slightly cloudier conditions with temperatures around 16-19C. The combination of strong sunshine and light winds will likely lead to peak temperatures by Wednesday or Thursday, reaching the highest levels so far this year in each of the four nations. London, the Home Counties, and Cambridgeshire are expected to record the warmest conditions.

Despite the significant warmth in the forecast, it does not technically classify as a heatwave in meteorological terms. For a heatwave designation, there would need to be at least three consecutive days at or above the “heatwave threshold,” varying depending on the location in the UK. As the warm and sunny weather persists, high levels of UV exposure and increased pollen levels will also be key features to watch out for.

The ongoing dry conditions have impacted various areas in the UK, with river levels notably low across the north-eastern quarter of England. Additionally, the heightened risk of wildfires is of concern, as satellite data suggests that the area burnt by wildfires this year in the UK has already exceeded totals from the past decade. With high pollution levels anticipated by mid-week, factors such as air quality and atmospheric pollutants remain in focus
