Kneecap footage being assessed by counter-terrorism police

In a recent development, counter-terrorism police are currently analyzing footage of rap group Kneecap allegedly making provocative statements about British MPs. At a gig in November 2023, a video surfaced showcasing a member of the west Belfast trio declaring, “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.” Furthermore, another video from November last year is also under scrutiny, capturing a band member chanting “up Hamas, up Hezbollah” during a performance in London. Kneecap has taken to social media to address what they describe as a “co-ordinated smear campaign” against them.

Both Hamas and Hezbollah are prohibited in the UK, making it unlawful to express support for them. A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police confirmed that they were alerted to a video on April 22 believed to be from a November 2024 event, which has been referred to the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) for evaluation. Another video presumed to be from a November 2023 event was also brought to their attention. The UK government has unequivocally condemned any threatening remarks directed towards individuals, emphasizing the importance of upholding democracy and denouncing political intimidation and abuse.

Recently, Kneecap faced backlash for displaying messages about the conflict in Gaza during their performance at the Coachella music festival in the US. Former X Factor judge Sharon Osbourne called for the revocation of the group’s US work visas, resulting in them being dropped by their sponsor and booking agent Independent Artist Group (IAG). Kneecap defended themselves against the visa controversy, highlighting the gravity of the situation in Gaza. The band members’ visas are now invalid, prompting them to seek a new sponsor for their upcoming sold-out tour in North America. Alleging a targeted smear campaign, Kneecap suggested they would pursue legal action against these perceived malicious efforts.

The counter-terrorism internet referral unit (CTIRU) plays a crucial role in identifying and addressing terrorist and extremist content online. Operating within the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, the CTIRU focuses on monitoring and investigating online material that violates UK laws. In response to concerning materials, the police initiate thorough investigations to ensure compliance with legal regulations
