Arrests over paint thrown on Tower Bridge during London Marathon

During the 45th edition of the London Marathon, two individuals were taken into custody for throwing powder paint on Tower Bridge as the men’s elite runners made their way through the course. The incident occurred at approximately 10:35 BST when supporters of a group called Youth Demand crossed the barriers and splattered the substance on the iconic bridge. Fortunately, event staff quickly intervened and removed the protesters from the path, allowing the race to continue without disruption.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the paint used by the protesters was chalk-based and posed no threat to the runners who were yet to reach that point on the route. Despite the protest, the men’s elite race proceeded smoothly after the offenders were apprehended. The two individuals were arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and are currently in police custody for further questioning.

Photos shared by Youth Demand depict the individuals standing on the road with shirts that read: “Youth Demand: Stop Arming Israel.” The motive behind their actions is linked to their advocacy against the arming of Israel, as stated by the group. The incident, although brief, sparked conversation and concern among spectators and participants, but ultimately, the London Marathon continued without any major issues following the incident
