After closing its doors in March 2024 due to a decrease in trade, the freehold of this seaside music and dance hub is being marketed for potential buyers. Despite the estate agents initiating the sale, no guide price has been specified for interested parties.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council decided to sell the Ocean Room following a vote in March. A recent non-invasive structural report highlighted defects in the building that could require an estimated £800,000 for rectification. However, a more invasive survey may elevate the costs up to double the initial amount. Guy Gowing, the senior partner at Arnolds Keys, expressed optimism about the venue’s unique location and rich historical background, making it an appealing prospect for serious investors in the leisure and tourism sector.

Originating as the Floral Hall in 1939, the Ocean Room has transitioned into a renowned night club and function site for the past five decades. This distinctive rotunda structure has hosted a variety of acts including Rag’n’Bone Man, Blur, and Mike Tyson. Notably, it also made an appearance in the Beatles-inspired film “Yesterday” by Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle. The spacious 15,000 sq ft building showcases a 10,000 sq ft circular main entertainment area, bars, kitchens, and a sizable south-facing terrace accessible from both the promenade and beach.

The current marketing of the Ocean Room presents a unique opportunity for potential redevelopments in leisure, healthcare, or nursery usage under existing planning regulations. Interested parties must demonstrate not only financial offers but also evidence of adequate funds for extensive repairs. Guy Gowing mentioned receiving interest from various local and national leisure operators, foreseeing potential for the venue to transform into a prominent bar, restaurant, or leisure facility, bolstering Gorleston’s allure as a tourist destination.
