UK claims 90% drop in mail-order cannabis from Thailand

The UK has seen a drastic decrease in the amount of cannabis being sent from Thailand, with a 90% drop in shipments in just three months. This significant reduction is attributed to close cooperation between UK Border Force and Thai Customs. Following the decriminalization of cannabis in Thailand in 2022, there was a surge in illegal shipments that threatened to overwhelm authorities. However, a new agreement requiring parcels from Thailand to undergo checks before shipment has led to a remarkable decrease in drug trafficking, from 15 tonnes to 1.5 tonnes within just a few months.

Border Minister Seema Malhotra praised the collaboration between the UK and Thai authorities, highlighting the positive impact on public safety. The successful interception of over 800 cannabis smugglers between October 2024 and March 2025 by Thai Customs, along with the seizure of more than nine tonnes of cannabis during the same period, demonstrates the effectiveness of the joint efforts in combating drug trafficking. Malhotra emphasized the importance of disrupting organized crime, protecting communities, and allowing Border Force to focus on critical priorities by intercepting illegal drugs at the source.

In a separate operation, the Home Office managed to intercept £6 million worth of cannabis from passengers at Bangkok Airport, working in partnership with Border Force and the National Crime Agency. Operation Chaophraya, initiated in July 2024, has resulted in the arrest of over 50 British nationals in Thailand for attempting to smuggle cannabis. Border Force Director General Phil Douglas emphasized the importance of international collaboration in preventing illicit substances from entering the UK and reiterated the commitment to keeping the borders secure and the streets safe. Last year witnessed a record number of drug seizures in the UK, with authorities uncovering 119 tonnes of illegal drugs with a street value of £3 billion. The joint efforts and advanced intelligence used in these operations highlight the dedication to combating drug smuggling and ensuring public safety
