A wrench attack at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Comprehensive in Aberavon, Neath Port Talbot, resulted from a love triangle, leading to the head teacher’s arrest. Anthony Felton, 54, admitted to attempted grievous bodily harm with intent against his deputy, Richard Pyke, 51. Judge Paul Thomas KC stated the incident of a head teacher attacking his deputy was unprecedented as he sentenced Felton to two years and four months in prison.
The court revealed that Felton was distressed upon discovering he fathered a fellow teacher’s child and learning of Mr Pyke’s relationship with the same teacher. Reacting to what he described as “overwhelming sexual jealousy,” Felton attacked Pyke in his office with a metal wrench. Pyke fell to the ground, with coworkers eventually coming to his aid after hearing the commotion.
Recognizing the seriousness of Felton’s actions, Judge Thomas emphasized the prevalence of violence in schools today. He noted the upcoming sentencing of a 14-year-old girl who attempted to kill two teachers and a student not far from Felton’s school. Despite Felton’s personal struggles, the judge emphasized the consequences of his actions, attributing the attack to Felton’s uncontrollable rage stemming from sexual jealousy.
Felton, who would have faced a lengthier sentence without an early guilty plea, was informed that he would serve half of his term on license. Additionally, a restraining order was issued, prohibiting Felton from contacting Mr Pyke, his family members, indefinitely. The Crown Prosecution Service expressed dismay at the unprovoked workplace violence, highlighting the serious potential consequences that mercifully did not come to fruition in this case
