Proms in the dark: BBC plans an all-nighter at the Royal Albert Hall

This year, the BBC Proms are set to take on a new twist with the introduction of an all-night concert event at the Royal Albert Hall. Organizers are encouraging fans to stay up into the early hours of the morning for a “magical” and “intimate” musical experience. The Dark Till Dawn Prom is part of the exciting lineup for the summer festival, which will feature performances by one-handed pianist Nicholas McCarthy, rock star St. Vincent, and a tribute to film composer Bernard Herrmann.

One of the highlighted events at the Proms will be a night dedicated to the TV show The Traitors, hosted by Claudia Winkleman. The concert will delve into the intense and eerie soundtrack of the popular series. In addition to this, audiences can look forward to performances of classical masterpieces like Shoshtakovich’s opera Lady Macbeth and Yunchan Lim playing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 4.

Several prominent artists are scheduled to grace the stage during the 2025 season, including soprano Aigul Akhmetshina, violinist Randall Goosby, and Grammy award-winner Angelique Kidjo. Also, there will be 84 concerts in total, spread across various locations such as Gateshead, Bristol, Bradford, Belfast, and Sunderland. Tickets for the events will go on sale on 17 May, with pricing starting at £8 for on-the-day “Promming” tickets and £10 for seated tickets.

The season will come to a grand finale on 13 September with the traditional “Last Night” concert, conducted by Elim Chan. The event will feature performances by soprano Louise Alder, trumpeter Alison Balsam, and a repertoire that includes sea shanties, Pomp and Circumstance, and Auld Lang Syne. Notably, the concert will include a special nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s movies with the inclusion of a piece re-arranged by Bernard Herrmann for Hitchcock’s Hollywood film The Man Who Knew Too Much
