'People have been eating chocolate digestives wrong for 100 years'

In the world of chocolate digestives, it seems that there is a longstanding debate about the proper way to consume these beloved biscuits. Anthony Coulson, the general manager at McVitie’s chocolate refinery and bakery in Stockport, believes that most people have been eating chocolate digestives the wrong way all along. According to Coulson, the chocolate-covered side of the biscuit should actually be facing down, rather than up. This revelation has sparked an ongoing discussion about the correct orientation of these teatime treats.

McVitie’s has been producing chocolate digestives for over 100 years, with about 80 million packets of the biscuits being made each year at their factories in Stockport and London. The factory itself has a rich history, opening its doors in 1917 and introducing the chocolate digestive eight years later. Despite the popular belief that the chocolate digestive is topped with chocolate, the company has revealed that the plain biscuits actually pass through a “chocolate reservoir,” which coats the underside of the biscuit as it moves along the production line.

Lynn Loftus, a longtime employee at the factory with 36 years of experience, describes the chocolate digestive as a “timeless” product that she believes will remain popular for years to come. Craig Leech, who has been with McVitie’s for 21 years and now serves as the planning manager for the refinery, recalls starting off by putting chocolate on top of the biscuits. Despite the evolving methods of production, employees like Alix Knagg, who has been at the factory for six months, continue to appreciate the enduring appeal of the chocolate digestive after a century of its existence.

The legacy of the chocolate digestive lives on at McVitie’s, with employees like Coulson, Loftus, Leech, and Knagg all contributing to the continued success of this iconic biscuit. As the debate over the correct way to enjoy chocolate digestives rages on, one thing is certain – these biscuits hold a special place in the hearts of many, regardless of how they are consumed
