The Liberal Democrats in England have put forward a new proposal to impose a £1,000 fine on individuals who play loud music or videos from their phones while using public transport. This move is aimed at addressing the issue of anti-social behavior on trains and buses due to disruptive noise caused by speakers and other audio equipment. Specifically targeting “headphone dodgers” who blast their music and videos on public transport is a key focus of this initiative.
Speaking on behalf of the Lib Dems, spokesperson Lisa Smart highlighted the negative impact that loud and intrusive noise can have on people’s daily commute. She emphasized the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for all passengers, whether they are on their way to work, accompanying their children to school, or simply seeking a moment of tranquility while in transit. The aim is to advocate for the majority of passengers who value peace and quiet during their journey.
A survey conducted by the Liberal Democrats revealed that a significant percentage of individuals in the UK feel uncomfortable asking fellow passengers to lower the volume of their music while on public transport. This discomfort is particularly pronounced among women, with 63% expressing hesitance in addressing noisy commuters. While the proposal has received support from Tory Shadow Transport Minister Gareth Bacon, additional measures to empower the British Transport Police in enforcing these regulations have been suggested. However, the implementation of the new fine would require government backing to come into effect.
Overall, the initiative put forth by the Liberal Democrats seeks to address the issue of disruptive noise on public transport and create a more pleasant and tranquil commuting experience for all passengers. By targeting “headphone dodgers” who insist on playing their music or videos loudly, the hope is to promote a culture of respect and consideration among commuters
