Andrew Flintoff 'thought he had died' in Top Gear crash

Ian Youngs and Paul Glynn are reporting about Andrew Flintoff’s first-hand account of the car crash he experienced while filming Top Gear. The former England cricketer turned TV presenter suffered severe facial and rib injuries when the car he was driving for the BBC motoring program rolled over in 2022. Despite the traumatic incident, Flintoff vividly recalls everything that happened and admitted that he thought he was dead in the immediate aftermath.

In a new Disney+ documentary, Flintoff revealed his thoughts during the crash when he believed he was dead and couldn’t see anything. He described feeling frightened to death as he thought he had lost his face in the accident. The incident occurred at Top Gear’s test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey, with Flintoff being in agony for about half an hour until emergency services arrived at the scene.

During the documentary, Flintoff recounted the terrifying moment when the car rolled over, and his instincts as a cricketer helped him avoid more severe injuries. Surgeon Jahrad Haq, who treated Flintoff, explained the complexity of his injuries, including broken and lost teeth, upper lip skin loss, and fractures in the upper jaw bone. The injuries were considered among the top five most severe cases the surgeon had witnessed in his career.

Reflecting on his recovery, Flintoff expressed mixed emotions about the ordeal, stating that part of him wishes he had not survived. Cricket played a significant role in his recovery, with his wife Rachael acknowledging that the sport was crucial for his mental and emotional well-being. Flintoff has since returned to coaching and television, with his return to cricket and hosting TV shows aiding in his healing process
